Five Ideas for A Magical Family Day Out

School is out and it’s time for fun and exploration. We have some ideas to help you to sprinkle magic over a local trip or hike with the kids, or a day out on a family vacation.

1. Go rock hounding

Going on a rockhounding adventure to find crystals right where they are formed in the earth is super exciting. You may be lucky enough to live near, or be able to travel to an area rich with gemstones,  but finding any stone can be just as magical. A closer look at an ‘‘ordinary’, ‘everyday’ looking stone can reveal sparkles of quartz and mica. You can find stones in pretty colors and with interesting patterns.

Hag stones, with a hole right through, are believed to be especially lucky and can be hung in the house, or worn as a talisman. The hole is even believed to give you a glimpse of Fairy Land if you look through it with just one eye open.

Why not find a set of stones that correspond to the four elements – red or orange for Fire, green or brown Earth, yellow or cream for Air and blue or black for Water. Or you could collect a set of stones and paint runes. You could use an existing runic system

      2.Forage for herbs

Another super magical thing to do is to forage for herbs. Buy a guidebook to the flowers and plants for the area and research the magical meanings and properties for the things you find. You could pick one or two and take them home to decorate the home or why not press flowers between two sheets of kitchen paper under a pile of heavy books.

An important word of caution: Never ingest any plant, or place it directly on your skin, unless you are 100% sure of what it is and that it is edible.

       3.  Make a magical fairy bracelet

This is a super fun activity for children to do on a nature walk .  Tie some sticky tape round your child’s wrist with the sticky side upwards. Then tell them how the fairies make their bracelets from all the pretty flowers and leaves they find. They can then look out for their own special flowers and leaves to stick to their bracelet while they walk..

        4. Have a magical  night walk!

Make lanterns with tea light candles in decorated jars and go on a magical walk at dusk or in the early evening. You can replace real candles with battery operated ones for small children.  The New Moon brings the darkest nights and is perfect for a lantern lit adventure. Why not make a Moon walk even more enchanting with our New Moon ideas to share with your kids.

        5. Make a fairy house

Choose a place where fairies might like to live, such as at the bottom of a tree trunk or beside a stream. Collect stones, twigs and flowers and make a little house. You could add moss for comfort and make little pieces of furniture.
