The other day I sat down and did a quick internet search around self-employment statistics here in the United States and saw that about 33% of people are self-employed! And, about 70% wished they had more control over their career and more flexibility in their workplace.

Now, I grabbed these numbers from the internet and didn’t dig into the source of the info but I’d guess it’s a safe assumption to make that 70% of Americans would consider self-employment!

I get asked a lot of questions around beginning a business and around making that PROFITABLE

Let’s jump in my invisible time machine and travel back in time to my graduate school days. I walked across that stage, a proud recipient of a Master’s degree…and didn’t have a job. I began working with someone who had ventured into self-employment as an educator and eventually found myself 7 months pregnant starting my own business that served kids with learning differences.

I was thrust into self-employment and hustled my witchy butt off to gain new clients and retain older ones. Later, I founded The Sisters Enchanted and am proud to say that I was able to birth my second baby at the same time that my business baby expanded enough to allow my husband to quit his position as a home improvement contractor.

So, seeing as how SO many people are interested in exploring the wild world of self-employment, I thought I’d round up my quick list of tips to becoming a Business Witch.

  1. Do something that you love to do and would want to do no matter what. When you have to give up your Netflix nights, run up a list of text messages that you forgot to respond to, and suddenly have no idea what day or time it is…you’ll have to love what you’re doing.
  2. Remember this: Just because it feels hard, doesn’t mean it isn’t working. DIY-ing your way through a website build with only YouTube and a cup of coffee by your side is TOUGH. But, something is better than nothing. Take it from me and my horribly done DIY website…you CAN power through and you CAN succeed even when it feels like it didn’t work.
  3. Find confidence in yourself, trust in your abilities, and be your own best friend during the process. Inevitably, you will find yourself in a conversation with a friend or family member who just doesn’t get it. If you are someone who looks to others for words of affirmation, practice being that person for yourself.
  4. Settle on ONE idea and implement the heck out of it. The more you change your mind, the more you switch directions, the more you get fomo and do what someone else is doing…the less likely you are to make progress.
  5. Find a group of people to go on the journey with! Having support and people to bounce ideas off of is worth its weight in gold. I LOVE having a group of people that are going through the same sorts of things as myself and walking along this crazy journey of entrepreneurship with me.
