Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought at some point in your life that you would love to have more balance.

You want to feel balanced like everything is in harmony. How many times can I say that? Yeah, is that you? I’ve been there. I’ve felt like everything’s out of balance and wished for a little more equilibrium in my life.

Well, I’ve got to tell you, as someone whose life is very, very full, I think that having balance is a bit of a myth. I firmly believe that the idea of balance is one that people want. I want balance. You want balance. But it’s not something that comes naturally to us.

Even when we work hard to maintain balance, I think we’re never truly in balance.

Here’s an example: when you’re at work, you’re at work. You’re not at home. When you’re at home, you’re at home. You’re not at work. You’re one or the other.

The overwhelm, chaos, and frustration come in when you’re trying to do several things at oncemanaging a home problem while working or handling a work issue while at home.

Everything feels challenging because you’re fragmenting your energy and yourself.

Everything feels challenging because you’re fragmenting your energy and yourself.

Balance, in the traditional sense, means holding two different things evenly. But what does that look like in real life?

We often think of balance as managing shadow and light or finding an even keel between opposites.

True balance isn’t about an even split; it’s about fully immersing in one thing at a time.

Take astrology. There are 12 zodiac signs, each with an opposite. So, we end up with six groups. I’m a Sagittarius; the opposite of Sagittarius is Gemini. During Cancer season, the opposite is Capricorn, which is why we have a Capricorn full moon.

The lunar cycle reminds us to be fully in one energy.

We don’t want balance in the sense of shadow and light equally coexisting at all times. We need the light to see the shadow and the shadow to appreciate the light. It’s about being in one or the other to fully understand and embrace both.

In our lives, this means being present in the moment.

When you’re at work, be fully at work. When you’re at home, be fully at home.

Presence is the key to feeling balanced. Chasing balance, on the other hand, makes us feel out of balance because we’re constantly trying to solve the problem of being in multiple places at once.

Instead of chasing balance, let’s chase presence.

Focus on the priority at hand, be present in it, and then move to the next priority. This way, you learn from the polarity of your situation and appreciate the moments as they come.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • What’s making you feel out of balance? Take a moment to identify what’s currently tipping your scales. Is it your never-ending to-do list? Lack of time for yourself? Too much time spent on certain activities?
  • What can you learn from the polarity of the situation? If your issue is a full to-do list, the opposite would be having no to-do list. What can you learn from that extreme? Do you thrive on being busy? Maybe the fullness of your list serves a purpose in your life.
  • What do you imagine would be different if you felt more in balance? Envision how your life would look and feel if you were more present. Would you have more peace and clarity? Would tasks seem more manageable?

True balance comes from within. It’s not about controlling the outer world to make it look balanced. It’s about finding emotional and spiritual balance inside.

When you feel balanced internally, the external world won’t press on you as hard, making you feel out of control.

By being present in each moment, you achieve internal balance, which in turn allows you to perceive your external world as balanced.

Presence over balance—that’s the motto!

We also have a Capricorn full moon right around the corner. This full moon brings that polar opposite energy to the new moon in Cancer, reminding us of the beauty of the moon phases and the rhythm they bring.
